Uncovering the Past to Inspire the Future: Pat Munro Homes Visits Fortrose Academy
Posted on
On Friday, 26th September, we had the pleasure of visiting S3 History pupils at Fortrose Academy to share the incredible story of a Bronze Age settlement uncovered during the early stages of our Greenside, Rosemarkie housing development.
Joined by Rachel Buckley from GUARD Archaeology Ltd, who carried out the investigation of artefacts, the visit gave pupils a rare insight into the area’s ancient past. They learned how this part of the Highlands has been home to people for over 3,000 years, long before the first foundations of modern homes were laid.
The pupils were especially fascinated by some of the remarkable items discovered on-site, including Bronze Age jewellery and even a prehistoric bear bone, helping to bring the story to life.
Beyond the archaeology, the session also served as a chance to highlight the many career paths connected to a modern housing development from trades, engineering, and design to archaeology, planning, and project management.
Hamish Little, Senior Manager at Pat Munro Homes, said:
It was a real privilege to visit Fortrose Academy and share the story behind such an extraordinary discovery. Seeing how engaged and curious the pupils were, not just about the archaeology, but about the wider work involved in bringing a development to life, was a real highlight. This project has been a brilliant example of how construction can uncover stories of the past while also helping to inspire future careers.
Rachel Buckley, Post Excavation Project Supervisor at GUARD Archaeology Ltd added:
It’s fantastic to be able to share the significance of the discoveries made at Rosemarkie with local pupils. These artefacts give us an incredible window into Bronze Age life in the Highlands. Helping young people see how archaeology connects with the world around them and the careers they might one day pursue is incredibly rewarding.
We would like to thank:
- Kate Morris from Developing the Young Workforce Inverness & Central Highland for organising the visit.
- Rachel Buckley from GUARD Archaeology Ltd for sharing her findings
- And the staff and pupils of Fortrose Academy for being such welcoming and enthusiastic hosts, your questions were fantastic!
We hope the experience has sparked some new curiosity not just about the past, but about the many exciting careers shaping the future.
